I can’t even count the number of times I have been asked this from a prospective immigrant – “What’s the scope of XYZ in Canada?”. I have always maintained this – if you are in IT and Digital, then Canada is a great place to be. And now, I have numbers from StatCan to support this.
In a recent report released by StatCan, Canada’s official statistics agency, the digital economy stood at $109.7 billion, or 5.5%, of total economic activity in Canada in 2017. That’s even greater than mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction (4.8%), transportation and warehousing (4.6%) and utilities (2.4%) in 2015.
While the Telecom sector remained the largest contributor to the Digital economy, eCommerce remained the fastest growing. In fact, e-commerce’s contribution more than doubled, from 5.5% of the digital economy to 12.4%.
As per StatCan, in 2017 there were 886,114 jobs in digital, that’s 4.7% of all jobs in Canada.
For folks with experience in Shopify, Magento, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Oracle Commerce Cloud, and Elastic Path, Canada is waiting for you with arms wide open.
Here’s a drill down of what the digital economy looks like, as per StatCan.

So having said that, you are probably thinking which Canadian provinces offer the most digital jobs. As per StatCan, Ontario had the highest contribution to the Digital Economy, followed by Quebec, British Columbia and Nova Scotia.
